Facts behind Apple cloud burst: how hacker wiped Mat’s ‘life’

Apple icloud getting hacked and wiping out of Mat’s entire digital information, placed on apple icloud has become a story of the week or should I say weeks to come by.

None the less it has been spread on internet like Jungle on fire and to my surprise when I Google “Apple” today the next thing, which I came across after apple’s very own website was, this guy Mat’s name. A tech journalist by profession got his apple account has been eaten up, as he became a recent victim of account hacking.

Mat had quoted on the web “I’ve lost more than a year’s worth of photos, emails, documents, and more. And, really, who knows what else. It’s been a shitty night,” M Honan a tech Journalist works at Wired.

However big question is “Was it really and Apple Cloud burst or Mat who missed out on setting up his account security?”

Let us look at the series of events that really shook Mat’s icloud world. Per ZDnet.com

At 4:50 PM, someone got into my iCloud account, reset the password and sent the confirmation message about the reset to the trash. My password was a 7 digit alphanumeric that I didn’t use elsewhere. When I set it up, years and years ago, that seemed pretty secure at the time. But it’s not. Especially given that I’ve been using it for, well, years and years. My guess is they used brute force to get the password and then reset it to do the damage to my devices.

The backup email address on my Gmail account is that same .mac email address. At 4:52 PM, they sent a Gmail password recovery email to the .mac account. Two minutes later, an email arrived notifying me that my Google Account password had changed.

( This is genius how could you link two critical accounts just like that ..)

At 5:00 PM, they remote wiped my iPhone

( Once Password was reset this was bound to happened, lets say they stole what all you have been writing and capturing )

At 5:01 PM, they remote wiped my iPad

( I am not so sure if they did not look for your account password or internet banking passwords.. check for those too Mat )

At 5:05, they remote wiped my MacBook Air.

(Well no consolation, they really don’t want you to be able to use a thing )

A few minutes after that, they took over my Twitter. Because, a long time ago, I had linked my Twitter to Gizmodo’s they were then able to gain entry to that as well.

Now let’s try to understand this to login to Apple icloud you are required to have an apple id and password.

First we need to understand Who have shared his apple id ?

No one possibly his id was well known as he is been using that account for exchanging emails. This cannot be a united state secret – Ok I agreed

Now let us look at the set of question apple ask about you in security

About 17 very generic in nature, a smart networking or social networking tool can surly track and answer those. But wasn’t that for every other account we have online ,then how come not every one of us account is being hacked and wiped…?

Now since we are focusing more on Account then cloud .. than indeed it’s an account related issue and not the cloud related Issue .

Here we need to understand that irrespective of where data is stored, it’s about How data is programmed to be stored, connected and accessed by its users.

Apple did try to fancy the technology by bringing everything under single umbrella and named it icloud. Making sense technically as it is less expansive and easy to use and user can’t hardly make a difference. From where they are accessing their data speed and access is perfectly maintained and shared across the globe.

In Mat’s case his Gmail account linked up to his Apple Account , considering being a non tech people don’t do it they us different accounts to secure the backup information. Linking all accounts was good to make it easy to access on single device but surly mat now knows this has its own repercussions.

Now Lets try to break this tag line Apple cloud burst .. ??  REALLY IS THAT SO ….!!

If that would have happened, icloud would have been completely not accessible to anyone. Hackers would have information worth $ billion and this generation using iphone would have been digitally high jacked.

Considering none of that have happened, I guess apple technology is pretty secured. We need to give some credits to these guys for building an icloud to make life a little easier for those who know’s how to use this technology.

As per hacking an account.. You need to be self aware and smart to keep the critical information backed up and secured. Use encryption technique to password protects your online data if you really want.

Now another Big Question why Mat Account…?

Is there a motive behind hacking his account so that a ripple effect can be generated and a negative publicity can be made for apple. Who is already facing a lot of heat after the pics of iphone5 has leaked to the web.

Again not sure how authentic those pics really are but if you google Iphone5 , you come across some heated arguments on if this what they are planning to produce they are screwed for sure. …and so on…!!

It all seems not going too well for apple when people are merely riding on news and not getting into the depth.
